Full description

This dataset contains unedited digital photographs from five small, high-resolution drone surveys in the Vestfold Hills, Prydz Bay in January 2020.

These images were collected by Geoscience Australia as part of AAS Project 4393, 'Assessment of landscape vulnerability to human impacts in the Vestfold Hills, Prydz Bay'. Marine Plain images were taken as part of AAS 4393 and Project 5034.

Each survey covers about 1 hectare in Adams Flat, Heidemann Valley, near Lake Dingle, and two fossil sites in ASPA No. 143 Marine Plain. Images were taken with a DJI Mavic 2 Pro Remotely Piloted Aircraft, which has a 20-megapixel Hasselblad camera.

Each image file contains details of:
-    camera model and version
-    f-stop
-    ISO
-    exposure time
-    focal length
-    latitude and longitude (WGS 84)
-    altitude
-    metering mode
-    white balance
-    date and time taken.

Images are .jpg format and labelled with the default name from the internal drone software (e.g. DJI_0001.JPG).

The image collection was automated with a drone survey app (DroneDeploy) with 90% frontlap and 80% sidelap for flight lines. Flight height was about 50 m. Horizontal location is accurate to +/- 3 m and is from the internal navigation system of the drone. Vertical location is accurate to +/- 10 m.

The images were collected to generate Structure from Motion models of the ground surface to assess detailed surface topography, composition, and potential vulnerability to damage and change. In ASPA No. 143 Marine Plain, the images were taken to assess the current condition of two fossil sites that have been protected with geotextile. The flights were conducted as a proof of concept and the data should not be used for anything other than a demonstration.
