---- Public Summary from Project ----
Antarctic lake cores record a history of evaporation and precipitation in the preservation of climate sensitive microbial communities. Integration of high resolution lake records with other climate proxies, such as ice core temperature records, will allow a comprehensive assessment of recent climate change in the Windmill Islands, East Antarctica.
A series of high resolution short (~30cm) sediment cores were collected from 5 Windmill Island lakes by mini gravity corer in the 2001/02 Casey summer field season (Holl Lake, Beall Lake, Lake 'E', lake 'F' and Lake 'M'). At each lake site, 3 cores were collected: 1 for palaeoclimate analysis via diatom assemblages, 1 for Lead-210 dating, and 1 for palaeopigment analysis. Diatom analysis is underway on the Holl Lake and Beall Lake cores, Lead-210 dating of Holl, Beall, F and M is in progress and palaeopigments of Holl and Beall will be started early in 2003.
