[Cite as https://purl.org/au-research/grants/nhmrc/GNT1159721]Brief description Evidence from our group has emerged that the association between fibre intake and lower blood pressure may be due to our gut bacteria. While our bodies are incapable of digesting some types of fibre, they feed the community of ‘good’ bacteria, resulting in the release of short-chain fatty acids. These might be beneficial in lowering our blood pressure. Our aim is to establish the role of the gut bacteria and short-chain fatty acids in the development and treatment of hypertension.
