Brief description
The Sydney Harbour catchment area includes a number of different river systems which drain into the Port Jackson estuary. During high rainfall events the catchment areas behave differently to deliver contaminants into the Port Jackson estuary. Under conditions of high rainfall contaminants are delivered to areas very quickly as freshwater slides over the top of the denser more saline waters of the estuary. Samples were taken along the Port Jackson estuary over two days to determine the behaviour of the freshwater plume as it travels in a layer of freshwater to be flushed or flocculate out at some point in the estuary. Samples were analysed for Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn concentrations.Lineage
Statement: Water samples were collected from the surface and stored in 2L polyethylene bottles, which were pre-cleaned with 10% HNO3 and rinsed with deionised water. The laboratory procedures were based on standard United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) 200.8 Rev 4.4 methods for the analysis of heavy metal concentrations in the suspended sediment. All water samples collected were filtered with cellulose nitrate filter paper of pore size 0.45 um using a filtering manifold. Material filtered and the filter paper is then dried at 60oC overnight in an oven. After acid digestion with 70% HNO3 and 32% HCL, the total dried sediment extracts are then analysed for Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn concentrations by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectometry (ICP-OES) [Varian Vista-AX ICP-OES (axially viewed)]. Accuracy was determined by the analyses of certified reference material, AGAL-101 and internal reference material ILS3s (a Port Jackson Mud reference material). A blank was included as a control to ensure that no laboratory contamination of samples occurred.Notes
