It is unknown where this map sourced toposurf (reef) data. The map highlights that the toposurf data varies in quality. This dataset may not be complete or accurate and must NOT be used for navigation purposes. See the chart 'Approaches to Heard Island' Aus 605, published by the Hydrographic Service, R.A.N. The lakes data does not match very well with the SPOT image, dated 9 January 1988. The quality of the spotheight data are unknown, early control for the Island was poor. Placement and heights were from the map and some heights were sourced from the gazetteer. More accurate data can be found in the contour layer generated from RADARSAT. Grave, volcanic cone and refuge data were located on advice from AAD staff using the map as a guide. Full description

This layer is stored as three datasets (polygon, line and point) in the Geographical Information System (GIS). Polygon data represents lakes and reefs. Line data represents reef boundaries. Point data represents spotheights, volcanic cones, refuges and a grave.

All the data in this dataset was sourced from the Heard Island 1:50 000 map, edition 3, published in 1985. The data conforms to the Australian Antarctic Spatial Data Model which includes Data Quality Indicators.
