The data were a line layer in MapInfo format. Later (approx. 1998) the data were converted into a polygon ArcInfo coverage. The layer was also clipped to match the AMBIS Heard Island coastline, but not clipped to take into account lakes. The data were edited by eye in 2001 using areas sketched by Jenny Scott on 1:50000 maps of Heard Island and on a figure of McDonald Island in a paper (Jenkin, J. F. 1997 Vegetation of the McDonald Islands, sub-Antarctic. Polar Biology. 18: 260-272.). Jenny's sketches were based on the Heard Island satellite image map and her field work 1986/87, 1987/88 and October-November 2000. Heard Island and McDonald Islands, vegetation layer.
This is a polygon dataset stored in the Geographical Information System (GIS).
The data represents approximately the areas of vegetation cover on these islands.

Statement: It appears the data were initially digitised off the Heard Island satellite image map, published in 1991. The data were a line layer in MapInfo format.
