Brief description

A GPS survey of seabirds on Heard Island during the Australian Antarctic Program's 2003/04 expedition.
This layer is stored as two datasets (point and polygon) in the Geographical Information System (GIS). Data represent flying bird and penguin colony extents and nesting sites.

Lineage

Progress Code: completed
Statement: The data were collected by GPS survey by Eric Woehler (AAD) using a Garmin 12XL receiver (not differentially corrected) during the 2003/2004 field season. The point and polygon data represent nesting sites or colonies of flying birds and penguins. GIS data derived directly from the GPS data have q_info=562.

Additional data were eyed based on field observations of inaccessible locations and GPS data recorded in the vicinity of these locations.

Data with q_info=563 were eyed in using advice from Eric Woehler with the 1991 SPOT image as a background.

Data with q_info=564 were eyed in using advice from Eric Woehler with the Digital globe multispectral image of Heard Island East, acquired 17 January 2003 as a background.

The shapefile data are formatted according to the SCAR Feature Catalogue.

Usually mapped to a Universal Transverse Mercator projection, Zone 43.
