The Gundagai Police Station was probably established on 9 April 1850 when a Chief Constable was appointed. (1)A local history source describes the origin of the station as follows "In 1850, Michael Norton was sent from Wagga Wagga to Gundagai, to be Chief Constable and storekeeper. A Court House and lockup were in the process of being erected at this time, however both were later destroyed by the flood of 1852. They were both later rebuilt in 1858, when the first Police Magistrate, Mr C. deWitt, was appointed." (2)
By 1863 the Station was situated in the Murray District, and the staff comprised one sub-inspector and mounted three constables and four constables on foot. (3)
