Brief description
The Powerhouse Museum’s collection of guitars includes both acoustic and electric instruments made in a variety of countries such as England, France, Spain, the USA and Australia. Of particular interest are the number of nineteenth century guitars represented by makers such as Louis Panormo of London and Johan Georg Staufer of Vienna noted for their innovative and experimental designs. More modern makers are also represented such as Jose Ramirez III or companies such as Dobro, Rickenbacker, Gibson, Epiphone Gretsch and Ibanez.Full description
Australian acoustic and electric guitar makers are represented too and include instruments by companies such as Maton and Pacific through to individuals like Roger Buckmaster, Graham Caldersmith, Jim Williams and Lawrence Smith. More unusual or lesser known instruments include the Australian designed and made pedal steel guitar by Jack Richards and his colleagues, the Kord King. Guitars owned and played by Australian musicians are also represented with names such as Angus Young, Harry Vanda, Deb Conway, Lucky Starr, Chris Bailey and Ed Kuepper.Data time period: 1770
