The data is being used to calibrate, validate and improve vegetation fractional cover products derived from remote sensing, in particular the satellite sensors MODIS and Landsat. The data is being used to improve the national fractional vegetation cover product of Guerschman et al. (2009) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). This algorithm enables national, monthly identification of ground cover separating the photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic components by applying a linear unmixing methodology for spectral reflectance every 8 days as 16-day composites. For confidence in its ground cover estimates, the results were verified in the field at selected sites across Australia to allow more extensive calibration, validation and verification of accuracy of the remote sensing method. The Ground Cover Reference Sites Database represents the results of the field validation of remotely determined cover measurements by observing cover along point intersects with a total of 300 points (or 200 points with crops). It also has additional observations and measures such as landscape features, fire evidence, erosion evidence, biotic disturbance evidence, biomass estimates, basal area measurements, soil features and dominant vegetation species, as well as site photographs. The Ground Cover Reference Sites Database focuses on sites in extensive grazing systems of the rangelands and, to a lesser extent, in the mixed farming or intensive land use zone. Field validation aims at obtaining a wide spatial coverage of sites, with limited site revisits for temporal coverage.&rft.creator=Anonymous&rft.date=2012&rft.edition=9/2014&rft.coverage=Survey of the Ground Cover Reference Sites Database of New South Wales area.&rft.coverage=northlimit=-28.8964623959797;westlimit=141.183401837047;eastlimit=149.910448074734;southlimit=-34.6893304463834;projection=GDA94;name=Ground Cover Reference Sites Database of New South Walesstudy area&rft_rights=Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/&rft_subject=Acacia brachystachya &rft_subject=Xanthium spinosum &rft_subject=Brassica rapa &rft_subject=Callitris glaucophylla &rft_subject=Poaceae sp. &rft_subject=Centaurea melitensis &rft_subject=Geology &rft_subject=Disturbance &rft_subject=Sclerolaena tricuspis &rft_subject=Sclerolaena brachyptera &rft_subject=Asteraceae sp. &rft_subject=Eragrostis cilianensis &rft_subject=Medicago polymorpha &rft_subject=Sclerolaena lanicuspis &rft_subject=Atriplex sp. &rft_subject=Trigonella suavissima &rft_subject=Prostanthera sp. &rft_subject=Brassica sp. &rft_subject=Senna phyllodinea &rft_subject=Aristida sp. &rft_subject=Astrebla sp. &rft_subject=Austrostipa scabra &rft_subject=Stipa sp. &rft_subject=Vegetation Cover &rft_subject=Neobassia proceriflora &rft_subject=Land Use &rft_subject=Vegetation Structure &rft_subject=Eragrostis lacunaria &rft_subject=Panicum sp. &rft_subject=Species Presence/Abundance &rft_subject=Sporobolus actinocladus &rft_subject=Sclerolaena obliquicuspis &rft_subject=Astrebla lappacea &rft_subject=Sclerolaena decurrens &rft_subject=Hordeum leporinum &rft_subject=Ptilotus leucocoma &rft_subject=Sclerolaena muricata &rft_subject=Casuarina sp. &rft_subject=Bassia paradoxa &rft_subject=Panicum decompositum &rft_subject=Landscape &rft_subject=Sinapis arvensis &rft_subject=Sporobolus mitchellii &rft_subject=ENVIRONMENT&rft_subject=Atriplex pseudocampanulata &rft_subject=Sclerolaena sp. &rft_subject=Dodonaea viscosa &rft_subject=Enteropogon acicularis &rft_subject=Eragrostis kennedyae &rft_subject=Calytrix sp. &rft_subject=Sclerolaena eriacantha &rft_subject=Maireana pyramidata &rft_subject=Enneapogon sp. &rft_subject=Austrodanthonia sp. &rft_subject=Maireana sedifolia &rft_subject=Pycnosorus chrysanthes &rft_subject=Eucalyptus camaldulensis &rft_subject=Salsola tragus &rft_subject=ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES&rft_subject=BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES&rft_subject=Eucalyptus conica &rft_subject=Eucalyptus crebra &rft_subject=Soil &rft_subject=Enneapogon nigricans &rft_subject=Aristida ramosa &rft_subject=Flora &rft_subject=Triraphis mollis &rft_subject=Chenopodium nitrariaceum &rft_subject=Erosion &rft_subject=Sclerolaena birchii &rft_subject=Dichanthium sericeum &rft_subject=Chloris sp. &rft_subject=Sporobolus caroli &rft_subject=Leiocarpa brevicompta &rft_subject=Sclerolaena limbata &rft_subject=Sclerolaena divaricata &rft_subject=Maireana aphylla &rft_subject=Eucalyptus largiflorens &rft_subject=Vittadinia sp. &rft_subject=Panicum effusum &rft_subject=Land Cover &rft_subject=Maireana schistocarpa &rft_subject=Eucalyptus melanophloia &rft_subject=Vachellia farnesiana &rft_subject=Enneapogon avenaceus &rft_subject=Lithology &rft_subject=Eragrostis parviflora &rft_subject=Danthonia eriantha &rft.type=dataset&rft.language=English ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rfr_id=info%3Asid%2FANDS&rft_id=http://aekos.org.au/collection/gov.au/abares/gcrs_NSW&rft.title=Ground Cover Reference Sites Database of New South Wales&rft.identifier=http://aekos.org.au/collection/gov.au/abares/gcrs_NSW&rft.publisher=TERN AEKOS, rights owned by Commonwealth of Australia (Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) (http://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares or http://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/aclump/land-cover/ground-cover-monitoring-for-australia))&rft.description=The Ground Cover Reference Sites Database of New South Wales has been collected by Office of Environment and Heritage, New South Wales as part of the Ground Cover Monitoring for Australia project.
