However, because of constraints of weather and helicopter availability, the time available at many sites was short and resulted in greatly varying times for searching and collecting. Our visit to Heard Island preceded the spring thaw and at many sites vegetation was snow covered, so that collections of bryophytes could only be made after digging through snow and ice. Specimens were placed into plastic bags in the field, stored at ambient temperature (below 0 degrees C) on Heard Island, and subsequently air dried and stored in paper envelopes. ---- Public Summary from Project ----
Australia's World Heritage listed subantarctic Heard and McDonald Islands are experiencing rapid climate change. Their terrestrial and coastal ecosystems are poorly known. This multidisciplinary project will gather baseline data on ecosystem biodiversity and species distribution, and make predictions about responses to future environmental change, providing vital information for conservation protocols.
