Geoscape Administrative Boundaries

Geoscape Administrative Boundaries is Australia’s most comprehensive national collection of boundaries, including government, statistical and electoral boundaries. It is built and maintained by [Geoscape Australia](https://geoscape.com.au/) using authoritative government data. This dataset comprises seven Geoscape products:

* Localities
* Local Government Areas (LGAs)
* Wards
* Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Boundaries
* Electoral Boundaries
* State Boundaries and
* Town Points

Updated versions of Administrative Boundaries are published on a quarterly basis.

Users have the option to download datasets with feature coordinates referencing either GDA94 or GDA2020 datums.

**Notable changes in the August 2026 release**

* The following localities have been added: ‘Barker’ in New South Wales, ‘Napranum’ in Queensland, and ‘Burlarl Di Wunami’ in Western Australia.

* The locality ‘King Leopold Ranges’ in Western Australia has been retired.

* There have been spatial changes (greater than 1km2) to the localities ‘Cobbitty’ and ‘Bringelly’ in New South Wales and ‘Mission River’ in Queensland.

* The local government area ‘Southern Limestone Coast Council’ in South Australia has been added.

* The local government area ‘The DC of Grant’ in South Australia has been retired.

* The new LGA ‘Southern Limestone Coast Council’ in South Australia has inherited all localities and wards from the retired LGA ‘The DC of Grant’.

* The following new LGA-locality links have been added: ‘North Yeoval’ to the LGA ‘Cabonne Shire Council’ in New South Wales, ‘Barker’ to the LGA ‘Camden Council’ in New South Wales, ‘Napranum’ to the LGA ‘Napranum Aboriginal Shire’ in Queensland, and ‘Bularl Di Wunami’ to the LGA ‘Shire of Derby-West Kimberly’ in Western Australia.

* The following LGA-locality links have been retired: ‘Uleybury’ from the LGA ‘Town of Gawler’ in South Australia and ‘King Leopold Ranges’ from the LGA ‘Shire of Derby-West Kimberly’ in Western Australia.

* There have been spatial changes (greater than 1km2) to the local government areas ‘Cabonne Shire Council’ and ‘Dubbo Regional Council’ in New South Wales, ‘Town of Gawler’ and ‘City of Playford’ in South Australia, and ‘Melton City’ and ‘Wyndham City’ in Victoria.

* There have been spatial changes (greater than 1km2) to the ward ‘Ward 2’ in South Australia.


The August 2026 release includes Geoscape ABS Boundaries 2026, aligned with the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ ASGS Edition 4 for July 2026 to June 2031.

The ABS Boundaries release will include key ASGS structures from Mesh Blocks through to SA4 and GCCSA, with additional layers such as Indigenous, Urban Centre and Localities/Section of State, Significant Urban Area and Remoteness Area structures to follow as they become available.

ABS Boundaries 2026 introduces an updated file structure and versioning approach. Version numbers will use a MAJOR-MINOR-EXTRACT format, for example 002-000-001, to clarify product versions and update levels. ZIP packages will also be simplified to contain only data files, with no contents.txt file or internal folders.

##What to Expect When You Download Administrative Boundaries

Administrative Boundaries is large dataset (around 1.5GB unpacked), made up of seven themes each containing multiple layers.

The Australian Government has negotiated the release of Administrative Boundaries to the whole economy under an open [CCBY 4.0 license](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).
