Shaw was born 3 Feb 1916 and educated at Melbourne CofE Grammar School, University of Melbourne and Christ College, Oxford. Professor of History Monash University 1964-1981 and member of the University council 1977-1979 & 1989-1991. He was appointed an officer of the Order of Australia 1982. Shaw has published widely, but particularly in early Victorian history. In 1980 he was commissioned by Associated Pulp and Paper Mills Ltd to write the company's history but owing to a restructure in the company's ownership the commission was abandoned in 1983.
