Full description
Gordon Beaton (1911-1988) was a self taught mycologist who worked from his home in Eildon and collaborated with Dr Gretna Weste for most of his 36 publications. Voucher specimens from these scientific works constitute the majority of his collection. Dr M.A. Rifai, a British mycologist who worked on many of Beaton's first collections, named a new species, Underwoodia beatonii, in Beaton's honour. An isotype of this is also housed in the University of Melbourne Herbarium collection. The Beaton collection includes approximately 650 fungal specimens, including many types (estimated at approximately 50). The collection includes microscope slides of most of the specimens and cards taxonomically and anatomically describing each specimen. Subjects
