The survey departed Madang (Papua New Guinea) on August 4, 1997 and arrived in Townsville (QLD) on August 22, 1997. Samples were collected from the Sepik river and from each end of the N-S transects (~ 150 km long) off the coast of PNG. These stations were upstream of the plume (145 E), off the Sepik and downstream, or in, the plume (144 E and 143 E). Samples were also collected along the equator 143 E, 147 E, 149 E and 152 E. Samples were generally collected from surface to ~ 300m except equator station at 152 E where samples were collected to 2000m. Parameters: Concentrations of unfiltered (total dissolvable) cadmium, copper, iron, manganese and nickel. Four inshore stations and a Sepik river station (18 samples) included filtered (total dissolved) cadmium, copper, iron, manganese and nickel. More information is available from the Data Documentation link below.Progress Code: completedMaintenance and Update Frequency: asNeededStatement: Original field data. The inshore transect samples were collected using Teflon coated General Oceanics (GO) Niskin bottles (10 litre) on the CTD rosette. The Sepik river station samples were collected by hand in a Nalgene LDPE sample bottles (1 L). The offshore transect and equator samples were collected using Helmond/Byrne (H/B) (6 litre) polycarbonate bottles made at CSIRO Marine Research on a Kevlar Hydro wire. For 6 depths from 300m to 2000m at the equator 152 E station Teflon-lined General Oceanics (GO) Niskins on the CTD rosette were used for sampling. Apart from the Sepik river hand samples, subsamples were collected inside the clean laboratory. For the samples that were filtered this was performed in the clean container using polycarbonate / vacuum set up. On returning to Hobart, the samples were acidified with 1 mL of Seastar HCl per 1 L of sample and stored for at least 3 months before preconcentration (dithiocarbamate/Freon/HNO3) and analysis by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption (GFAAS) performed in a class-100 laboratory. In addition a direct analysis was used for the Sepik River samples for both Mn and Fe and a select number of UF samples were analysed directly for Fe. In June 2017 this trace metal dataset was requested and was prepared for public release.&rft.creator=Anonymous&rft.date=2016&rft.coverage=westlimit=142; southlimit=-19.4; eastlimit=153; northlimit=2; projection=WGS 84 (EPSG:4326)&rft.coverage=westlimit=142; southlimit=-19.4; eastlimit=153; northlimit=2; projection=WGS 84 (EPSG:4326)&rft_rights= https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/&rft_rights=https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by/4.0/88x31.png&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=License Graphic&rft_rights=Attribution 4.0&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=License Text&rft_rights=Data is made available under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence.
