Since 1966 when the first acquisitions were made by the former Department of Fine Arts, the Flinders University collection of art has grown to more than 5,500 works, making it one of the largest University collections in Australia. Housed at Flinders University, Bedford Park, works are accessible by appointment. The Collection has four major strengths: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art; European prints; Post-object and Documentation and Australian political posters. FUAM’s holdings also encompass a representation of indigenous art from outside Australia with works from Papua New Guinea, North America and Africa, as well as examples of colonial and 20th century Australian art and Japanese woodblock prints. Collections have been strengthened over the years through the support of many individuals. Long standing patrons Emeritus Professor JVS Megaw and Dr M Ruth Megaw have been instrumental in helping to build collections particularly in the area Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. Significant donations have also been received from Marion Elizabeth Wharmby, Bruce Petty, Margaret S Bain and the late Rodney Gooch.
