Kathleen Fitzpatrick completed undergraduate studies of the University of Melbourne, and at Oxford in the UK. She briefly worked at the University of Sydney before tutoring in the English department at the University of Melbourne 1930-1932. She returned to the University of Melbourne in 1938, lecturing in history. She retired an associate professor of history in 1962. Fitzpatrick was a foundation member of the Australian Humanities Research Council and Foundation Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities. She was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1989.
