Brief description

Fish data collected from dive transect surveys undertaken in 2002, showing number of species at each survey site.

Statement: Fish sampling dives were undertaken at 20 sites throughout the Recherche archipelago in October 2002. At each site, 8 transects were surveyed at each of 3 different depths, making 24 records for each site and resulting in 480 survey sites in total. The survey sites were located using differential GPS, and the coordinates were then used to create an ArcView shapefile fish_survey_sites.shp. 50 fish species were sampled. The species data was entered into the spreadsheet Esperance fish transects Popn matrix master.xls. The species data spreadsheet was then joined to the survey sites shapefile, to create the final shapefile fish_survey_sites_species.shp, representing 480 survey sites and the corresponding number of individuals for each fish species present. A second ArcView shapefile, fish_survey_sites_pooled_depths.shp, was also created, with combined transect data at each of the different depths. This shapefile has 60 survey sites. The species data spreadsheet was joined to this shapefile, to create fish_survey_sites_pooled_depths_species.shp.shp, representing 60 survey sites and the corresponding number of individuals for each fish species present. Fish species length data was entered into a second spreadsheet Esperance fish transects length master.xls. This data was recorded at the transect level, corresponding to 480 survey sites. The spreadsheet contains 5,300 records of length (in mm) of 27 fish species. The length data spreadsheet was converted to a text file fish_transects_length.txt, and loaded into ArcView as a table.
