Fern Bay Infant School in the County of Gloucester was established in May 1955 and continued in that status until January 2002 when it became Fern Bay Public School.(1) An Infant School enrolled only the youngest children and were introduced in Sydney in 1880 to relieve the pressure on nearby Public Schools. A Public School had a minimum attendance of 30 children prior to 1867, 25 children until 1880 when the number was reduced to 20. From 1957, the minimum number was reduced to nine.(2) In 2003, Fern Bay Public School was located in Vardon Street, Fern Bay in the District of Newcastle.(3) ENDNOTES1.
