Brief description Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a strictly human bacterial pathogen of global significance, that ranks among the top 10 infectious disease killers. A commercial vaccine is not available. This research will investigate the epidemiology of GAS outbreaks, focussing on the ongoing scarlet fever outbreak in China. We will seek to understand the mechanisms of GAS pathogenesis and how the human host resists infection. We will undertake experimental vaccine trials using newly discovered GAS antigens.
