Brief description Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a very common heart rhythm disturbance which carries with it an increased risk of having a stroke and a 2-fold risk of dying. Although there have been many advances in our understanding of AF, a cure for most people has not been found. We are interested in studying people who are at an increased risk of developing AF but have not done so yet. We plan to do this by mapping the electrical activity of the heart from its surface during open heart surgery. This research may lead to a more effective treatment for AF.
