Full description

Ecosystem typologies are a mechanism for describing ecosystems on the basis of their physical an biological characteristics. Here we provide a first draft of ecosystem typologies for terrestrial Antarctica. The physical parameters included elevation, slope, solar radiation and rugosity; climate parameters included temperature (including degree days), precipitation, cloud cover and wind; biological inputs included occurrence records and species distribution models (from AAS_4296).

Attached to this metadata record is a copy of the functional typology map (in geotif form).

Statement: There were some issues with the resolution of the input data and also with reproduceability of results. To overcome these issues we settled on the use of factor analysis for the delineation of the typologies The dates provided in temporal coverage correspond to the start and end dates of the project.

Notes

Purpose
To describe and classify terrestrial Antarctic ecosystems, and to use these as a basis for the development of functional models and assessment through the Red-listing of Ecosystems process.
