Statement: Aerial photographs from 1954 were interpreted with the aid of ground truthing from SCUBA surveys to determine stages of deterioration ranging from continous meadow, through the development of patchiness to the final bare substrate. The photographs were overlain with grids and area of seagrass was calculated and converted into hectares.
In addition to the photo interpretation, an investigation of fibre deposits was made for evidence of the existance of Posidonia meadows on the Eastern Shore of Cockburn Sound between James Point and Woodman Point, an area too far offshore to be included in coastal photographic mosaic. Replicate cores of 3 cm diameter and 50 cm depth were taken on the Eastern Shelf (see thumbnail).
Fibrous remains of rhizomes covered by varying depths of sand indicated the presence of teh old seagrass meadow.
