Full description
Ecklin South Primary School (School No. 2647) (VA 3577) was a coeducational primary school located approximately 12 kilometres south of Terang, in western Victoria. The school first opened in 1885 as Ecklin South State School, on the Timboon-Terang Road. It was moved back from the main road in 1936 and a new building was erected. An additional room was added in the 1940s to meet growing enrolments, however they then dropped significantly with the opening of Timboon Consolidate School in 1941. A teacher’s residence was erected in 1950.
In 1970, there was a statewide decision to change the use of the term ‘State School’ to refer to all primary, secondary and technical schools instead of just primary schools, and for all primary schools to use ‘Primary School’ in the name. Accordingly, the school name was changed to Ecklin South Primary School.
In 1993, Ecklin South Primary School closed, likely due to declining enrolments.
Ecklin South Primary School should not be confused with Dixie State School (School No. 891) (VA 3264), which was known as Ecklin Common School from 1868 to 1907.
