Brief description Defects in the connections between nerve cells underpin many developmental disorders such as autism and mental retardation. Furthermore, defects in re-establishing nerve cell connections prevents successful regeneration after disease or trauma. Calcium is vital to nerve cells, especially as they grow and connect. This project will develop novel light-activated tools to manipulate calcium signals to control nerve cell growth and connectivity and enhance nerve regeneration.
