Full description

The spatial extent of the long spined sea urchin, Centrostephanus rodgersii, was estimated by divers using underwater visual census methods to survey rocky reef habitats at 13 regions along Tasmania's east coast (between Eddystone Point and Recherche Bay). Within each region 3 subsites were surveyed, and within each subsite 4 belt transects were surveyed.

Divers recorded depth, percent substrata type, percent C. rodgersii barrens habitat; abundance of urchins (C. rodgersii and H. erythrogramma), rock lobster (J. edwardsii) and abalone (H. rubra). Divers also recorded algal cover (estimated), C. rodgersii barrens and substratum type using set categories (see below).

Areas of grazed substratum could be discerned unambiguously. The substratum was classified either as flat rock shelves, very large boulders, large boulders, small boulders, cobble, pebble, gravel, or sand. Transect position was recorded using a GPS point for the start and finish of each transect.
Statement: GPS used datum WGS84. Note GPS inaccuracy may have resulted if datum type unknowingly changed etc (e.g. some data points appear on land, however subsite names give some reference as to point location).

Purpose
To determine the distribution of the long spined sea urchin (Centrostephanus rodgersii) on the east coast of Tasmania, to estimate the cover of C. rodgersii barrens on the east coast, and to compare the standing stocks of commercially harvested black lip abalone (Haliotis rubra) and southern rock lobster (Jasus edwardsii) in barrens habitat with that of adjacent seaweed beds.
