Development of Grain Protein Concentrates for the Aquaculture Feed Industry

This project coordinates, manages and implements research that addresses the development of the potential of Western Australian produced commodities, such as lupin and canola meals, for inclusion in aquaculture feeds, both domestically and internationally. This project has progressed substantially over recent years and grain markets are now established in Australia and Europe. Present annual estimated value of these markets is ~$12 million.

The project involves:

* substantial liaison with the grain production and processing industries and the aquaculture feed production industries to identify key opportunities to facilitate the expansion of use of grains in aquaculture feeds; and
* the development and assessment of value-added protein meals from lupins by evaluating of the nutritional value of key products when fed to rainbow trout and processing limitations on the production and use of those grain products.

All research work is being conducted in WA through UWA's Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA) using the Department of Fisheries nutrition research facility at the Pemberton Freshwater Research Centre. Expansion of the project will see further commercial partners involved in 2003/2004 and additional product evaluation work undertaken in Tasmania and Norway.
