The Department of Sustainable Natural Resources was established on 2 April 2003 following the Commissioning of the 4th Carr Government.(1) Resources was an area of substantial administratrive change after the election with the Department of Natural Resources being created from former agencies, or sections of agencies. The following were transferred to the Department of Natural Resources: 1) from the former Department of Planning - the Resource and Conservation Division, the group of staff who worked principally for the Coastal Council; and other staff whose main activities concerned natural resources;2) from the former Department of Land and Water Conservation – all branches except the Soil Services Unit, the State Water business unit, the Town Water and Recycling Services branch, the group of staff principally involved in the administration of the Fish River Water Supply Scheme, staff principally involved in the administration of the Crown Lands Act 1989 and other Acts administered by the Minister Assisting the Minister for Natural Resources (Lands), staff from the minor ports unit, and staff principally involved in the administration of the Roads Act 1993 in relation to Crown roads;
3) from the Environment Protection Authority - Healthy Rivers Commission;
4) from the Department of Information Technology and Management - Forestry Industry Structural Adjustment Unit;
5) from the National Parks and Wildlife Service - Threatened Species Support Unit and similar Staff involved in the administration of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 and the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995;
6) from NSW Fisheries – staff who administered Section 7A of the Fisheries Management Act 1994.(2) On 18 June 2003, responsibility for the Western Lands Act 1901 (No.70) was transferred ro the Minister for Natural Resources and responsibility for the Public Reserves Management Fund Act 1987 (No.179) was vested jointly in the Minister for Natural Resources and the Minister Assisting the Minister for Natural Resources (Lands).(3) The short existence of the Department of Sustainable Natural Resources came to an end when the Department was abolished on 1 July 2003 and its branches transferred to the newly created Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources.(4) ENDNOTES
