Establishment and FunctionsThe Department was established in April 1990 as a result of machinery of government changes. It was during this time the Department of Industry, Technology and Resources (VA 2661) was given responsibility for many of the economic policy and planning activities of the Department of Management and Budget (VA 1022).
To reflect the added responsibilities the Department of Industry, Technology and Resources was renamed as the Department of Industry and Economic Planning and all functions were transferred under Administrative Arrangements Order (No.74) 1990, effective 2 April 1990. In September 1990 the Department was renamed as the Department of Industry and Office of Economic Planning and functions were transferred under Administrative Arrangements Order (No.79) 1990, effective 25 September 1990.
The department is responsible for the following broad functions:
Facilitating the development of the State’s minerals and resources industries;
- Providing assistance to industry;
- Economic, regional, trade and industry development;
- Microeconomic reform police and priorities;
- Tourism and liquor licensing;
- Responsibility for the State’s business corporations
