Establishment and Functions

The Department was established in April 1990 as a result of machinery of government changes.  It was during this time the Department of Industry, Technology and Resources (VA 2661) was given responsibility for many of the economic policy and planning activities of the Department of Management and Budget (VA 1022).

To reflect the added responsibilities the Department of Industry, Technology and Resources was renamed as the Department of Industry and Economic Planning and all functions were transferred under Administrative Arrangements Order (No.74) 1990, effective 2 April 1990. In September 1990 the Department was renamed as the Department of Industry and Office of Economic Planning and functions were transferred under Administrative Arrangements Order (No.79) 1990, effective 25 September 1990.

The department is responsible for the following broad functions:

Facilitating the development of the State’s minerals and resources industries;
  • Providing assistance to industry;
  • Economic, regional, trade and industry development;
  • Microeconomic reform police and priorities;
  • Tourism and liquor licensing;
  • Responsibility for the State’s business corporations

    • AMRAD (Australian Medical Research and Development) Corporation Ltd
    • CIRCIT (Centre for International Research on Communication and Information Technologies)
    • TRACE Scientific Pty Ltd
    • Portland Smelter Unit Trust
    • Strategic Research Foundation
    • AAII (Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute)
    • Victorian Medical Consortium Pty Ltd
    • RAMAX Ltd
In December 1990 the Government issued a Manufacturing Industry Statement which detailed initiatives and an action plan to strengthen the future of the manufacturing industry in Victoria. To ensure the Department of Industry and Office of Economic Planning was more directly focused on manufacturing it was renamed as the Department of Manufacturing and Industry Development (VA 3012) and all functions were transferred under Administrative Arrangements Order (No.82), effective from 18 December 1990.
