The data were analysed by thematic analysis using NVivo (NVivo; QSR International Pty, Ltd, Version 12, 2018) The data from this needs analysis provided information which was used to create a purpose-built training program for pharmacist preceptors at James Cook University. This dataset includes: 1 x SPSS file (.xlsx) containing survey data and analysis of the preceptor and student surveys Copies of the preceptor and student surveys Transcripts of preceptor and academic staff interviews and student focus groups 1 x NVivo (.nvp) analysis of preceptor and academic staff interviews and student focus group interviews. The resulting training program was developed online using a Blackboard Learning organizational site at James Cook University. The program was evaluated from the perspective of both preceptors and experiential placement students. This data relates to a preceptor training needs analysis of key stakeholders which was conducted to inform the development of a pharmacist preceptor training program. The study involved sequential mixed methods and included a survey and interviews with pharmacist preceptors, a survey and interviews with pharmacy students and interviews with pharmacy academic staff.
