Full description

The New South Wales Government Gazette of 4 June, 1841 contained the following proclamation dated 2 June, 1841 - "And whereas there has been for some time in the course of erection, as and for a Public Gaol, adjacent to the new Court House at Darlinghurst, near Sydney, in the said Colony, and it is expedient that the Gaol should be declared to be a Public Gaol, Prison and House of Correction ... I the Governor ... do hereby proclaim, declare and notify the said Building at Darlinghurst, situated as aforesaid, to be a Public Gaol, Prison and House of Correction." (1) The Sydney Gaol was closed and prisoners were transferred to the New Gaol at Darlinghurst. Initially both male and short-sentenced female prisoners were held at Darlinghurst , but the women were transferred to the Women's Penitentiary at Long Bay when it opened in August 1909. When the State Penitentiary at Long Bay opened on 2 June 1914 (2) the Darlinghurst Gaol was closed. Darlinghurst Gaol ceased to be a prison on 14 July 1914.
