Identifications have been done at CSIRO on the survey vessels or post voyage or the specimens have been passed to various Australian museums for identification. Images identifications use the Codes for Australian Aquatic Biota (CAAB) database and where possible CAAB records are cross linked to the World Register of Marine Species. Each specimen has a record identifier labelled CSIRO Specimen Reference. As at January 2020, there are 4900 images linked to 1565 taxa with the deepset sample from 4890 m. Many of the images have revised identifications. A significant addition is specimens from the RV Investigator research voyage in2017v03, titled Sampling the abyss: latitudinal biodiversity patterns along the base of Australia's eastern continental margin.
