Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Journey Resource Map

Despite the increasing emphasis on global learning, many students—particularly those from less mobile or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds—have limited access to international mobility opportunities. While virtual exchange has recently gained traction in higher education, educators often lack the structured support and resources needed to design and implement Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects that are inclusive, pedagogically robust, and scalable.

To address this, educators from Monash University and Penn State University collaborated to develop the COIL Resource Journey Map, an open-access, web-based resource designed to support educators in building capacity for designing, implementing, and assessing COIL projects. The initiative is grounded in three guiding principles: pedagogical intentionality, criticality, and plurality, and draws on current literature, and educators’ experiences, in virtual exchange. The resource is structured into six interrelated modules: partnerships, students, design, technology, assessment, and research. Each module includes practical strategies, reflective prompts, curated tools, and research-informed advice.

The COIL Resource Journey Map has supported educators in reimagining global learning in more inclusive and accessible ways. It offers a practical roadmap for integrating intercultural collaboration and global engagement into existing curricula across disciplines and digital environment contexts. The initiative raises important questions about how institutions can more systematically embed COIL and virtual exchange into program-level curriculum planning, how best to support educators in sustaining cross-institutional partnerships, and how to evaluate the long-term impacts of COIL on student learning and equity of access to global experiences.
