Full description

In 1860, a cemetery site was gazetted to provide a burial place for the growing village settlement of Pentridge to the north of Melbourne. The site, opened in 1862 under the name Pentridge Cemetery but official burial records are not available until 1870s. Since 1878 the Cemetery has become known as Coburg Public Cemetery and is also referred to as Pine Ridge Cemetery.

From 1860 the Cemetery was managed by private trustees. Then in 1970, Fawkner Cemetery Trust assumed the management of the Cemetery under provisions of the Cemeteries (Coburg Public Cemetery) Act 1970. Then in 1971, under the Cemeteries (Fawkner Crematorium and Memorial Park) Act (No. 8116), the trusteeship changed to an independent Trust. During this time Coburg Public Cemetery was closed to new burials although rights of existing internment holders were still accommodated.

Under the provisions of the Cemeteries Acts, trustees of public cemeteries were appointed by the Governor-in-Council. The trustees were responsible for the administration and maintenance of the cemetery, the collection of fees and expenditure of revenue (for e.g. grants, subsidies received) the registration of burials and cremations, the making of rules and regulations and determining the scale of fees.

In 2010, Coburg Public Cemetery was amalgamated into the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (VA 5107).
