Brief description

This dataset (provided as a series of CF-compatible netcdf file) consists of 5 maps of Antarctic landfast sea ice, derived from NASA MODIS imagery. There is one map per year, spanning the 5 year period from 2018 to 2022. The one map per year covers the time period from Day-Of-Year 61-75, which is the time of yearly minimum extent. The data are provided in a polar stereographic projection with a latitude of true scale at 70 S (i.e., to maintain compatibility with the NSIDC polar stereographic projection).

Lineage

Progress Code: completed
Statement: This dataset broadly follows the methodology given in Fraser et al., 2020 (https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-12-2987-2020) but contains no automation (i.e., all fast-ice edges were manually extracted) due to the relatively small amount of effort required to manually extract only 5 maps.

Notes

Purpose
This circum-Antarctic dataset of landfast sea ice minimum yearly extent a) illustrates the large inter-annual variability of fast-ice minimum extent, and b) indicates a sharp decline in minimum fast-ice extent in 2022.

Data time period: 2018-03-02 to 2022-03-17
