Christian Metz was a French semiotician and film theorist. He applied Ferdinand de Saussure's theories of semiology to film. Metz's work had a significant impact on film theory in France, Britain, Latin America and the United States. His text Film Language: A Semiotics of the Cinema is a founding work in the area of semiotics. Metz's work adapted both Sigmund Freud's psychology and Jacques Lacan's philosophy for his own work.
