Brief description Atherosclerosis commences by the trapping of cholesterol to sugar coated proteins known as proteoglycans which leads to the formation of plaque. As yet, there is no pharmaceutical treatment that directly targets the disease process in the artery wall. Elucidation of the mechanisms responsible for the initiation of lipid deposition in the artery wall will enable identification of suitable therapeutics targets. Such an agent would be used with a statin to prevent atherosclerosis.
