The Central Police Office was in operation by 1832. (1)

In 1892 the Central Police Station was built in Liverpool Street, Sydney. It provided accommodation for about fifty police (single men) in a barracks and included 'very complete and commodious' cells. Along with lock-ups proposed for Regent Street and Surry Hills '...no city in the world will be provided with cell accommodation equal to that in Sydney'. (2) The station is sometimes referred to only as 'Liverpool Street'.

By 1919 Central [Police] Station reported to the No. 1 Head Station (of five Head Stations in the Sydney Metropolitan Police District). (3) By 1930 the barracks was no longer used for accommodation and had been converted to accommodation for office for Criminal Investigation, Fingerprint and Photographic Branches, relocated from Police Headquarters. (4)

By 1967 Central [Police] Station had been renovated and altered to accommodate No. 1 Police Station, No. 1 Sub-District Superintendent, and the Police Prosecuting Branch. It was also the administrative headquarters for the No. 1 Sub-District. (5)

In 1987 the Sydney Police Centre, Surry Hills was opened. (6) This Centre incorporated a police station intended to replace Central Police Station. (7)
