Brief description

Project Overview: A range of solutions will be required to reach globally agreed emissions reductions targets for carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is part of the suite of technologies that will contribute to lowering atmospheric emissions of CO2 from Australia's energy system. There are a wide variety of technologies at various stages of technical and commercial readiness, with more development underway for cost effective CO2 capture and storage. Our research will provide new knowledge to inform cost-efficient measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) of the environment of CCS projects in coastal waters.

Description: A General Oceanics model 8050 fCO2 analyser was installed in the carbon team’s container and measured seawater from the ship’s auxiliary seawater pump for the duration of the voyage.

Component sensors:
Sensor | Make Model | Calibration
Non-dispersive infra-red CO2 analyser | Licor | LI-7000 | Continuous (see below)
Equilibrator temperature sensor | Hart-Fluke | 1521 | Jan 2017

Survey settings:
The instrument was configured in continuous flow mode with a measurement interval of 30 seconds. Seawater fCO2 measurements are interrupted for about 22 minutes every 4 hours for analysis of calibration gases and atmospheric air.

Calibration Information:
The system ran a set of 4 calibration gases every 4 hours. Calibration gas concentrations are 0.00 ppm, 261.41 ppm, 377.78 ppm and 450.79 ppm. Calibrations are applied in post-processing.
