The series was created by the Rolling Stock Engineers Office of the Victorian Railways VA 2876.The series consists of records relating to the design, construction, fit-out and maintenance of carriages and brake vans. The records relate to a wide range of engineering and asset management responsibilities of the Rolling Stock Branch.Files consist of correspondence, agreements, memoranda, cost schedules, convention and seminar papers and engineering calculations and specifications. The following areas were documented, for example:
-Van and car construction, including design calculations and instructions to workshops,
- Brake, axle and wheel maintenance, including procedures for train examinations and running requirements,
- Air-conditioning specifications and subsequent maintenance carried out on installed systems,
- Provisions for the building and operation of buffet and dining cars,
- Standard gauge conversion,
- Ventilation and
- Gas and oil cooking and heating fit-out
