Calvin Rochester Callaway was born at Sydney on 18 August 1932. He was educated at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. (1)

Callaway was admitted to the New South Wales Bar on 25 November 1960. He practised out of 182 Phillip Street, Sydney, from 1963 at 174 Phillip Street and by 2003 at 35 Rangers Avenue, Mosman. He was admitted to the Australian Capital Territory Bar circa 1979. He was made a Queen's Counsel on 27 August 1981. In 2008 his areas of practice were appellate, insurance, medical negligence, personal injury and professional negligence. (2)

Callaway was an Associate Judge of the District Court of New South Wales from 1 February to 31 December 1988 and from 3 January 1989 to 2 January 1990. He was an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales on three occasions: from 27 February to 12 May 1989, from 26 February to 4 May 1990, and from 29 September to 19 December 1997. (3)

Callaway and his wife Denise have two sons and a daughter. (4)
