Full description

Box Hill South Primary School (School No. 4183) (VA 3898) was a co-educational primary school located on Birdwood St, Box Hill South, in Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs.

The school first opened in 1927, as Box Hill South State School, in a newly built red brick building. There were 90 students initially enrolled. In 1951, to accommodate increasing enrolments, an infant block was added to the site, and in 1963 a hall, canteen, and film room were also erected.

In 1970, there was a statewide decision to change the use of the term ‘State School’ to refer to all primary, secondary and technical schools instead of just primary schools, and for all primary schools to use ‘Primary School’ in the name. Accordingly, the school name was changed to Box Hill South Primary School.

Due to decreasing enrolments, in 1993 it was decided to merge Box Hill South Primary School with the nearby Bennetswood Primary School (School No. 4693) (VA 3812). Both schools were accordingly closed, and the new Roberts McCubbin Primary School (School No. 5419) opened for the 1994 school year. It took over the Box Hill South Primary School site, and as of 2025, continues to use the original brick school building.
