Full description

On 7 February 1969, the Sydney to Melbourne Express passenger train, the Southern Aurora, collided with a Melbourne to Albury goods train a mile from the Victorian town of Violet Town. Eight people were killed and 117 were injured. The accident occurred when the driver of the Southern Aurora, John Bowden, died of cardiac failure some time before the collision.

A Victorian Railways Commissioners Board of Inquiry, consisting of representatives from the Investigations and Commercial Branches, created the series in accordance to Section 135 of the Railways Act 1958. The series included:

- Newspaper clippings,
- Technical reports, staff duty reports,
- Witness statements, medical and passenger lists,
