Banyena State School No. 1753 opened on 9 August 1876.

The primary school was located on a Reserve site, Allotment 3 in the township of Banyena, Parish of Burrum Burrum. The school building was a portable classroom.

The school closed in 1946, and the students were transferred to Banyena South State School No. 4188. 

By 1959, enrolment at Banyena South had increased and a committee was formed to have Banyena reopened. On 2 February 1965 teaching recommenced out of the Banyena Hall while a new school building was constructed. It was occupied on 1 February 1966, but not officially opened until 20 September 1967 by the District Inspector.

Banyena Primary School closed permanently in 1976.
