Ballarat Gaol (sometimes spelled Ballaarat Gaol), was a high security gaol for men, women and children located in central Ballarat. It was constructed from 1856 to 1862 and had the operational capacity of 74. It was one of several gaols built to replace the various temporary prison structures and prison hulks that had been holding prisoners up until the 1850s. Like the other prisons built at the time, it employed the Pentoville concept of prison design and prisoner reform. Prior to the construction of the gaol, the police lock-up had been proclaimed as the Ballaarat Gaol in 1854. The Ballarat Gaol was closed in 1965 and prisoners were temporarily relocated elsewhere until Ararat Prison (VA 5758) opened in 1967.
