The Bairnsdale Sewerage District was proclaimed and Bairnsdale Sewerage Authority (VA 1950) was constituted on 24 October 1932. The Commissioners of the Bairnsdale Waterworks Trust (VA 2059), for the time being, were to be the sewerage authority.

The first meeting of the Bairnsdale Sewerage Authority was held on 2 December 1932.

Water Reform
Under Section 8 of the Water and Sewerage Authorities (Restructuring) Act 1983 (No. 9895) many Waterworks Trusts and Sewerage Authorities were abolished. Water Boards replaced Waterworks Trusts and Sewerage Authorities, or the functions were transferred to Municipalities. Further reforms in the 1990's led to the amalgamation of many of the Water Boards created after 1983.

Abolition
In 1984, the Bairnsdale Sewerage Authority was abolished and its functions were transferred to the Mitchell Water Board (VA 2559) as of 1 July 1984.
