Avoca Primary School opened around 15 June 1857.
The school was originally the Avoca National School. Construction began in 1856, after £90 17s was collected from local families and sent to the National Board of Education in 1854. Attendance was high – by 1867 there could be as many as 125 students in the schoolroom at one time.
In 1878 a new school building was constructed at 118 Barnett Street in Avoca. The school was built to accommodate up to 324 students, and it opened with an initial enrolment of around 250 students. It was designed by the Chief Architect and Surveyor of the Victorian Department of Education, Henry Robert Bastow. The building was added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 1982.
The original building was sold to the Church of England to use as a parish hall.
As of 2020 Avoca Primary School is still operating.
