Full description

The Australian Wheat Collection commenced in 1968. Samples were obtained from thirteen existing wheat collections in Australia and the first sowing took place in 1969. In addition samples were acquired from three other collections viz
From the Tamworth Research Station a sample of 2.5 thousand durum wheats that originated from the Beltsville USA Collection
A collection that had been imported into Queensland from the USA Department of Agriculture and
A collection from Mr G. Halloran from an expedition to Afghanistan organised by the University of Reading , United Kingdom. 10- 12,000 accessions were made from the original collection and samples continued ti be acquired from all Australian what growing regions and samples of commercial wheats were imported. The Wheat Industry Research Council provided salaries, travelling expenses and casual labour costs in addition to funding the construction and equipment of the building. The Commonwealth Department of Health provided one salary and erected and maintained thew quarantine glasshouse. The State Government was responsible for the administration of the Australian Wheat Collection and provided the land and equipment necessary for seed generation. The facilities included a laboratory, preparation room, seed storage room and a plant room. The following records of the collection were maintained. A shelf List an alphabetical card index Collection listings according to the Australian Wheat classification and an alphabetical listing of wheat types A register of information received with the various samples A register of computer data banks.
