Researchers Prof Richard Roberts;

Brief description This project will develop new science-based technologies in archaeological dating and chemistry and apply them to key sites along an 8000 km transect from central Asia to northern Australia, to obtain unique insights into the history, lifeways and cognitive capabilities of early modern humans and co-existing archaic humans, including Neanderthals, Denisovans and ‘Hobbits’. Fresh light will be cast on human evolution and interactions, patterns of dispersal between Asia and Australia, and adaptations to new environments. This project will also enhance our understanding of Australia’s ancient cultural heritage and expand the nation’s capabilities in science-based archaeology by creating a multi-institutional centre for archaeological science.
