Full description
A collection of materials from and about the Australian Film Institute (AFI) collected since its inception in 1958. The AFI has been the premier non-government film organisation for the promotion and acknowledgement of the Australian film industry. Primarily this has occurred through the organisation of the AFI Awards (held annually), which has become the principal outlet to celebrate the best work within any given year in Australian film. The AFI provides support to filmmakers and film workers and also ran a short film distribution service, an exhibition arm (with cinemas in Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart), and a research and information centre (known now as the AFI Research Collection). The distribution, exhibition, and research activities have ceased at the AFI though in 2002 the AFIRC was moved to its current home at RMIT University. Due to the fact that the AFIRC was a section of the AFI a substantial collection of materials on the AFI was amassed at the AFIRC. The AFIRC has continued to collect materials pertaining to the AFI since its move to RMIT University. The materials held in this collection are mainly in the form of clippings files on the AFI as well as booklets and glossy brochures created for the various AFI Awards ceremonies.User Contributed Tags
